Citroen believes it will become a front-runner in the electric car market with the launch of the C-Zero in the final quarter of 2010.The French marque, which has previously sold electric vehicles in the UK, has teamed up with Mitsubishi to produce the C-Zero city car.
Having already produced more than 5,500 electric vehicles, the marque says it has the experience vital to being a front-runner in a market segment that is set to grow significantly in the coming years.
The company expects the C-Zero to particularly appeal to public sector operators, local authorities, smaller businesses and company fleets as well as private customers looking for a car with low running costs.
The C-Zero is powered by an electric motor delivering 64 bhp from 3,000 to 6,000 rpm. Maximum torque of 180 Nm is available from 0 to 2,000 rpm. Power is transmitted to the rear axle via a single-speed reduction gear.
The battery is recharged by plugging the supply cord into a 220-volt socket. A complete charge takes six hours, while an 80% charge is possible in 30 minutes using an external station.
The four-seater comes with a 166 litre boot and standard features will include: power steering, ABS, traction control, ESP, electric windows, six airbags and air conditioning. C-Zero has a top speed of 80 mph, acceleration from 0-62 mph in 15 seconds and a range of around 80 miles.
